All Zero Paints dry matt and require clearcoating unless otherwise specified Application Notes :  Zero Paints are pre-thinned for Airbrush use. Shake container until paint is thoroughly mixed. Spray at 15 - 40 psi, 3 - 4 medium cross coats are recommended. Air drying at 20°C Dust-free: 5 – 10 mins, Tack-free: 20 - 30 mins.   For additional thinning use Basecoat Thinners. What type of Paints are they?

The paints supplied are called "Basecoat Paints" which are a solvent based paint (similar to Cellulose but different) which dry with a matt finish and require clearcoating. As they are solvent based they need to be applied over a suitable primer, they can be Solid, Metallic, Mica, Pearl or Candy colours

What colours can you match?
We can match almost any 1:1 production Car and Motorcycle since the late 1980 (some cases back to the late 1960's).
Historic race cars colours can be difficult to match, but with suitable photos and information we can do our best to help. Listed below are just a few of the mainstream automotive manufactures we can match.

How do I order paint which is not listed? 
Firstly contact us to check we can mix your required colour, supplying as much information as possible. Then order 60ml Custom Mixing at the online store. Example

How do you get the exact match?
The colours are mixed using a PC Driven CD-ROM Formulation Database which guarantees a perfect reproduction of the original colour; this database is constantly being updated with new formulas.

Do they need thinning?
No, all paints are supplied pre-thinned for Airbrush use, they are thinned to a consistency which is suitable for Airbrushes with nozzle sizes of 0.3mm upwards. Additional thinners are available if further thinning is required.
It is not recommended to over thin the paint, too much thinners and increase the chance of the paint becoming to HOT and affecting/eating the plastic below the primer. If unsure test first.

Is Primer needed?
YES, As the paints are solvent based it is necessary to primer the plastic/resin before applying the basecoat colour; this seals the plastic/resin and creates a key for the paint to adhere to. Any brand of primer should be OK, but if in doubt do a test first.

Do I need to Clearcoat?
YES, All basecoat colours dry Matt and REQUIRE Clearcoating. The following Clearcoats have also been tested without any issues: Zero 2k Clearcoat, Zero Pre-thinned Lacquer, Tamiya TS13, Mr Hobby range (Mr Top Gloss etc), Halfords Lacquer Therefore most General Automotive Lacquers should be Ok, but if in doubt do a test first.

How many models can I paint with 1 x 60ml Bottle?
1 x 60ml jar of Paint will cover 2 or 3 1:24 Scale models depending on the colour, yellow needs more coats than blue or black, but you will always cover 1 off model with 60ml, if you are painting a 1:12 scale model car we recommend 2 x 60ml bought at the same time, ensuring they are from the same batch.

What should I use to clean my Airbrush?
You can use either Basecoat Thinners or Airbrush Cleaner, alternatively any thinners that contain Toluene should work, but it's best to test first.

Do you supply instructions?
Full colour instructions, can also be found online here or/and on the www.zero-paints.com website, basic instructions are however on each jar

How do I strip Basecoat Paints from my model?
Paints can be stripped using Brake Fluid and/or Isopropyl Alcohol. But always test on a small area before appling to an important project.

How long does the paint keep?
As the paint is supplied Pre-thinned, the thinners will evaporate over time, it should be fine for 12 months, if the thinners have evaporated you can add more basecoat thinners to bring the paint back to the original state.
Keeping the paint in a Cool, Dry Environment will greatly length it's life.
We also suggest only purchasing small quantities of paint at one time, rather that bulk buying and storing for long periods of time

Basecoat Paint Application Guide 

What are Zero Basecoat Paints?
Basecoats are Solvent Paints being either Metallic, Mica/Pearl or Solid colours, which require a clear coat. They can be colour matched to almost any 1:1 car and motorcycle. The colours are mixed using a formula which guarantees a perfect reproduction of the original colour.

Preperation
Cleaning
Start by removing all mould lines from the body, using various grades of abrasive paper P400 - P1000
Most manufacturers of resin and plastic kits use a mould release agent to allow castings to release better from the mould. The release agent prevents the paint from adhering to the parts. For this reason you will need to remove it from the body/parts. This can be done by cleaning the body with Key and Clean, (available separately), this contains a dual-action cleaner that removes silicones, waxes, other contaminates and contains micro abrasives which help to scuff the plastic so the primer adheres better. Alternatively wash with mild warm soapy water and lightly sand the panels/body with abrasive paper to key the plastic for the primer.

Primer
Primer is a preparatory coating put on before paintingand required before applying Zero Paints. This ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the plastic/resin/metal parts being painted. Basecoat paints can be applied over virtually any primers; they have been tested with most popular brands with model makers e.g. Halfords, Tamiya and Mr Hobby (Mr Surfacer) and our own Airbrushing Primer/Micro Filler. Apply your chosen primer with a light mist coat followed with a few medium coats until you have full coverage. Leave until fully dry. Flatten the primer with abrasive paper, or Micromesh 4000/6000, wash clean with warm water. (The smoother the primer coat the smoother the over finish will look). Ensure the body is clean and dry. It is recommended to use a Tack Cloth to remove all contaminants, surface dust, dirt, etc, left from sanding before continuing.

Colour Application
Always give the paint a good shake/stir to ensure it is fully mixed. (The individual colour components can separate and settle over time.) Set the pressure of your compressor between 20-40 PSI, test and adjust as necessary for your own equipment. Zero Basecoats Paints are supplied pre-thinned to suit most airbrushes with 0.3 or larger nozzles. If more additional thinning is required, Basecoat Thinners are available separately.

Groundcoat/Undercoat
Most colours can be applied over a white/light grey primer, but some require a particular Groundcoat colour to be applied first to get the correct finished colour. If these are required, apply 2-3 coats ensuring an even coverage.

Basecoat
Depending on the colour supplied, you will need to apply about 2-5 coats. (figure 6) Each coat will dry within a few minutes. DO NOT apply Wet Coats, the paint will dry MATT (this is normal), just ensure you have even colour coverage. The final coat should be applied in a criss-cross fashion to allow an even consistency of the metallic particles.

Clearcoating
As mentioned earlier, the basecoat colours will dry with a Matt finish therefore MUST be clearcoated. For the ultimate shine and colour depth Zero 2K (2 pack) High Solid Acrylic Clearcoat is recommended. The following Clearcoats have also been tested without any issues: Tamiya TS13, Mr Hobby range (Mr Top Gloss etc), Halfords Lacquer, Automotive Lacquer.
