Carrera HYBRID 3D-Printed Bodies – Instructions and Processing Tips
Overview
These 3D-printed resin bodies are specifically designed for Carrera Hybrid vehicles. The bodies can be mounted directly after being individually painted. Matching wheels are included in the package, but only the original tires are compatible with these wheels.
Assembly Instructions
All bodies are equipped with two pins for attaching to the chassis unit. Since 3D-printed resin bodies require some post-processing and careful handling, please follow these guidelines:
Mounting the Body:
• Check the fit:
• The body should be placed onto the chassis unit without applying excessive force.
• If necessary, slightly enlarge the holes on the chassis unit using a file to improve the fit.
• This adjustment does not affect the functionality of the original Carrera Porsche Hybrid bodies.
• Remove excess material:
• Depending on the type of body, you may need to carefully remove some material from the front mounting point on the chassis unit using a file to ensure optimal fit.
Additional Components:
• Exhaust Systems:
• Additional components, such as exhaust systems, should be attached to the designated areas of the chassis unit, just like the original model.
• Rear Struts (Porsche 917):
• On the Porsche 917, the strut that interferes with the rear pin must be carefully removed.
• The modeled rear strut should then be glued to the underside of the body at the rear (e.g., using super glue).
• Exhaust Pipe (Audi IMSA GTO):
• For the Audi IMSA GTO, a hole may need to be drilled on the right side of the body to install the included exhaust pipe from the inside, allowing the pipe’s end to protrude cleanly outward.
Driver Inserts:
• The driver inserts included in the kits need to be individually adjusted to fit the body.
• Carefully file the inserts as needed to ensure a perfect fit.
Handling Tips:
Since these are resin parts, they are more fragile than mass-produced plastic components. Handle with care during assembly to avoid damage.
Processing and Painting
1. Surface Preparation:
• Use 800-1200 grit wet sandpaper to smooth the body and remove visible print lines. This step is essential for achieving an even and clean paint finish.
• Clean the body thoroughly with isopropanol (99%) or soap and water to remove dust and grease. Allow it to dry completely.
2. Priming:
• Apply a matte black filler primer (e.g., airbrush or spray can) as the first layer. This will help fill small imperfections.
• After drying, sand the body again with fine wet sandpaper (1000-1500 grit) to smooth the primer.
• Apply a thin layer of gray or white primer to create the perfect base for painting.
3. Painting:
• Use high-quality model paints like Zero Paints, Tamiya, or Mr. Hobby Color, depending on the desired color and finish.
• Paint in multiple thin layers to avoid drips. For airbrush applications, Zero Paints or Vallejo Model Air work perfectly.
• Let each layer dry thoroughly before applying the next.
4. Decals:
• After painting, apply decals. Cut the decals to size, soak them briefly in lukewarm water, and carefully place them on the body.
• Remove any excess water with a cotton swab or soft brush. Allow the decals to dry for at least 24 hours before applying clear coat.
5. Clear Coat:
• To protect the paint and decals, apply a clear coat. Recommended options include Zero Paints 2K Clear Coat or Mr. Hobby Clear (available in glossy, semi-gloss, or matte finishes).
• Spray the clear coat in several thin layers and allow it to cure fully (at least 48 hours) for best results.
Additional Processing Tips:
• Precise Fit:
• If needed, make small adjustments to the body or chassis with sandpaper or a file to ensure a perfect fit.
• Additional Components:
• Individual parts, such as exhaust systems or rear struts, should be mounted according to the included instructions.
Processing Experience:
“I personally sand the body with 1000 and 1200 grit wet sandpaper to make the surface smooth. Afterward, I apply a thin layer of matte black primer, which also fills small imperfections. After sanding again, I use a light layer of gray primer before starting the actual painting process. This method has consistently delivered the best results for me.”
With these steps and the right materials, your Carrera HYBRID body will become a true highlight!
